Popcorn

Every Scout deserves the chance to earn their own way through Scouting, and our annual popcorn sale is one of the best ways to make that happen. The South Louisiana Council handles all the heavy lifting — from setting up the sale and creating promotional materials to managing vendor relationships — so your unit can focus on what matters most: getting out there and selling. It’s more than a fundraiser; it’s a hands-on lesson in hard work, goal-setting, and the pride that comes from funding your own adventures.

Dollars raised through the popcorn sale stay local, flowing directly back into the Scouting programs and activities that shape young people across our region. Scouts can choose the selling approach that works best for them — traditional take-order sales, online sales to friends and family near and far, or show-and-sell at local businesses and events. Ready to get started? Reach out to your District Popcorn Kernel or District Executive to learn more and kick off your unit’s sale.

• Videos and resources help Scouts learn how to be successful.

Ways to Sell Popcorn

There are three options for selling popcorn: show-and-sell (also called wagon sales), take-order sales, and selling online to friends and family out of town.

1. Show-n-Sell (Storefront) and Wagon Sales

Show‑n‑Sell is a direct-sales fundraising approach where Scout units sell popcorn at booths in high-traffic areas—or by going door to door—allowing customers to purchase on the spot. The main goal is to increase visibility and build strong community support.

Key features of Show-n-Sell:

  • Immediate Delivery: Customers receive their popcorn at the time of purchase.
  • High-Traffic Locations: Booths are often set up outside grocery stores, hardware stores, community events, or within local neighborhoods.
  • Uniformed Sales Team: Scouts wear their uniforms, promote the product, explain what the fundraiser supports (such as camping trips or equipment), and build confidence in sales and public speaking.
  • Inventory Management: Units order popcorn in advance, keep it on hand during sales, and track inventory throughout each shift.

2. Take-Order Sales

Traditional “take order” sales (often called Pre-orders) are a cornerstone fundraising method for scout units. Sellers go door-to-door or take order sheets to workplaces, collecting commitments and payments upfront, and returning weeks later to deliver the actual popcorn.

The traditional take-order process operates through a sequence of events:

Sales Pitch: Sellers (often in uniform) are equipped with a physical order form, a pen, and a list of available popcorn varieties and prices. The seller introduces themselves, names their organization, and clearly states what the fundraiser supports (e.g., camping trips or equipment). Since the seller does not carry the actual products, the customer is relying on a brochure or a digital app to make their selection.

Order and Payment Collection: The customer’s name, contact information, selected products, and quantities are recorded on the order sheet (or enters it directly into a fundraising application). Payment should be collected at the time the order is placed. Customers can pay via cash, check, or digital payment (such as credit/debit via a mobile card reader.)

Order Consolidation (if using paper Order Forms): The seller turns their physical order forms and money over to their unit leader or “Popcorn Kernel”. The organization totals all individual orders into one massive, master order and submits it to council.

Fulfillment and Delivery: Once the bulk popcorn shipment arrives, the leadership team sorts it into individual boxes for each seller. Sellers pick up their specific customer orders and return to their neighborhoods to distribute the popcorn, typically a few weeks after the initial sale.

3. Online Sales

The enhanced online sale means that you can sell any item online the same as in-person. Scouts create accounts and send emails to people they know, asking for their support by buying popcorn. Scouts can even create their own customized selling page! Customers who place online orders will have the popcorn shipped directly to their homes – this is great for family and friends who aren’t local!

PRIZE SELECTIONS

The Keller Prize Program is available for units that prefer not to develop their own incentive program. The cost of prizes and patches will be deducted from the unit’s commission earnings; however, many units find that the small investment in incentives leads to increased Scout participation, higher sales, and greater overall commission revenue.

UNIT PRIZES

Units have the flexibility to create their own incentive programs, allowing each unit to tailor rewards to its unique needs and preferences.

CAMPMASTER PRIZES

  • Online sales count towards reward prizes. Anyone selling $400 or more online will receive an extra $10 Amazon gift e-card from CAMP MASTERS.

Scouts who sell $3,000 or more can choose one of two High Achiever prizes. (High Achiever prizes are not cumulative.)

  • VISA Debit Card amount equals 4% of your total sales. Visa cards are rounded to the nearest $10 and may be sent via email.
(Example: If a Scout sells $3,000 worth of CAMP MASTERS products, the Visa debit card would be worth $120), or
  • The High Achiever Camp Package is an excellent start to your camping gear for your trip. Along with a 2-person tent, they have you covered with a hanging hammock and a set of Walkie-Talkies that can be recharged from any USB port. Also included is an Aluminum Flashlight, 5pc Stainless Steel Mess Kit (with large pot, lid/frying pan, small pan, and 2 mugs) and the Swiss Army Fieldmaster Knife (15 features, from blades to a bottle opener, scissors to screwdrivers and wire strippers to a saw).

Note: Scouts must have $3,000 or more in sales recorded in the system to qualify for the High Achiever Reward.  All sales will need to be credited to Scouts weekly.  CAMP MASTERS will contact the email on the qualifying scouts account when the sale is over to pick the prize.
