Calcasieu Area, South Louisiana Council

Scouting in Southwest Louisiana has been shaped by volunteer leadership for over 107 years, driven by individuals committed to preparing the next generation for success. In 1919, the Rotary Club of Lake Charles helped establish the Calcasieu Area Council, which was officially chartered by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, strengthening volunteer support and expanding Scouting’s reach throughout Southwest Louisiana.

The first troop west of the Mississippi River, Troop 1, was led by Seaford Mayo. From the outset, dedicated community volunteers have been central to bringing the Scouting program to life for youth across the region.

Today, the Calcasieu Area, as part of the South Louisiana Council, continues this legacy—serving more than 380 youth across six traditional parishes: Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, and Vernon—thanks to the continued dedication of its volunteers.
