Capital Area, South Louisiana Council

Scouting in the Greater Baton Rouge Area, for nearly 107 years, has been strengthened by generations of dedicated volunteers committed to developing strong leaders and responsible citizens. The local Scouting movement began in 1910 with the formation of the region’s first Boy Scout troop in Baton Rouge, sponsored by First Presbyterian Church. From the very beginning, community volunteers have been essential to delivering meaningful, life‑shaping Scouting experiences to youth.

As participation and interest grew, the need for a coordinated volunteer support system became clear. In 1919, the Istrouma Area Council was officially chartered by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, strengthening volunteer leadership and expanding Scouting’s reach throughout the region.  In the late 1950s, the establishment of Avondale Scout Reservation in East Feliciana Parish provided a lasting outdoor home for Scouting programs, outdoor adventure, and leadership development.
